SIR – For some time, residents within the Wharfe Valley have been painfully aware of the inadequacy of the provision of school places for children at our primary and secondary schools.

This has recently resulted in a petition being raised and signed by 2,000 people in two weeks, showing the great strength of feeling about this matter.

At the meeting of Bradford Council on Tuesday, this petition was debated, when Conservative councillors from the Wharfe Valley supported the petition and requested the Labour-run council to seek support from the Government to finance greater education provision within the Wharfe Valley.

As part of the debate, I raised the question of what has happened to money raised from housing developments in the Wharfe Valley, under Section 106 of the Town & Country Planning Act 1990. This section relates to money paid by developers to the council to finance any impact on the local infrastructure, such as roads, schools, etc, that results from an increase in the local population.

I received no response. I shall be pursuing this matter further and shall let you know of the outcome.

Cllr Gerry Barker, Conservative, Wharfedale Ward
