SIR – In a recent report regarding a meeting between council leader David Green and bosses of the HS2 projects Mr Green demands the re-opening of the Wortley curve. Sorry, Councillor, but you are wrong with this.
I’ve lived in Cleckheaton all my 83 years. Worked at a firm off Manchester Road, used the train to Exchange Station, walked back up to work. When the Spen Valley line closed in 1971 it was the bus service. My son works for the same company but his wife uses the car for her job in Huddersfield.
He boards the 268 bus, which goes down Little Horton Lane, away from the company, gets off at St Luke’s Hospital, endures all weathers.
Is the Wortley curve not in Leeds, as you mention this would be a direct line to Wakefield? Why do you want to go there? What does the public want?
You have had correspondents writing to this page asking why there are no stations between Bradford and Halifax. I ask the same. The amount of people living next to the Spen Valley Greenway, those who say they could leave their cars at home if this line was re-opened. Never mind the Wortley curve. The Spen Valley route will take you to Wakefield.
Alan Harrison, Pyenot Way, Cleckheaton
