SIR – I think it is generally accepted that most Bradford residents are sick and tired of the problems created by the travelling community when they camp illegally on land in the area.
Since 1994, the police have had strong powers under Section 62 of the Criminal justice and Public Order Act whereby they can immediately direct trespassers from both public and private land when there are vacant plots in that local authority area. This action has to be, in these parts, with the permission of Bradford Council.
As it stands there are plenty of vacant pitches at the Esholt site, but Bradford Council seems to be dragging its heels on giving permission.
Why, one wonders? Aren’t they supposed to be serving the ratepayers of our city?
With the powers available, it is high time that our recalcitrant Labour council got its finger out for the benefit of their long-suffering citizens. There is no excuse for not moving swiftly on such matters.
