SIR – As Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day 2014 approaches, I should like to ask your readers for their continued support for the Poppy Appeal within the Bradford Metropolitan District.

Last year, the national Poppy Appeal raised a staggering total in excess of £38 million, which is an increase of more than £1 million on the 2012 total. This is due to the amazing generosity of the public and the invaluable support provided by many thousands of volunteers.

In the centenary year of World War One, the Royal British Legion is ever mindful of the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces and the demands on their services are as important now as they were then.

The Royal British Legion is continuing with its Poppy People campaign again this year to try and recruit desperately needed volunteers. Anyone over 16 years of age can help, they only need to email volunteersupport@britishlegion.org.uk.

Poppies are available to the public from hundreds of outlets in the Bradford Metropolitan District and I urge your readers to give as generously as they can to help ensure the success of this year’s appeal. The continued support of the general public is vital to enable the Royal British Legion to carry on its invaluable work.

Councillor Mike Gibbons, Lord Mayor of Bradford
