SIR – There have been a number of letters lately from correspondents commenting on the politics of austerity, the inequality of the North-South divide, the receipt of benefit payments and out of touch MPs of all political persuasions.

Here is a current extract from the T&A for a job in Bradford.

“School Caretaker - Bradford. Salary: £0.93-£1.20 per hour. Candidate will have previous experience in school caretaker/maintenance role. Shift patterns may be split, access to a car would be an advantage.

Responsibilities: Key holding; carrying out security procedures for buildings and grounds; opening and closing of the premises; ensuring proper operation and function of alarms and fire equipment; ensuring emergency exits are not obstructed; liaising with the emergency services including calling out; reporting acts of theft or vandalism to headteacher and/or police; general maintenance duties, including; cleaning and repair work. Salary: 7 to 9 per day GBP”

Do our MPs think the remuneration for this job, that asks the applicant not only for basic skills requirement, but also to effect repair work, work unsocial hours, have a car at their disposal and be responsible for the operation a fire alarm system that could be the difference between life and death, adequate and fair?
