SIR – OVER the last few days, we are still coming to terms with the terrible news of the murder of Alan Henning. Alan was working tirelessly helping other Muslims from the UK in relief efforts in Syria since last Christmas.

This was an honourable man who worked hard for his family as a taxi driver in Greater Manchester and died helping others as a volunteer. We as Muslims are deeply touched and horrified at the loss of this great human and humanitarian.

We would strongly urge Muslims in the UK not to be supporting this group that is causing terror around the world and bringing the name of Islam into disrepute.

Muslims should refer to the Quran and Hadith and testify that these types of groups are condemned at every opportunity.

We have heard imams at Friday’s prayers convey the message to Muslims and over this weekend at Eid congregations across the UK.

Parents should also get the message to their children that under no circumstances is this in the name of Islam.

We must now take steps to stop young British citizens being radicalised by extremists. We have been here before and previous efforts by all have not fruited the right results and we are now witnessing terrible actions from those in part from these shores.
