SIR – So the rumours I’ve been hearing around the Media Museum have come true: the cinema screens at the jewel in our City of Film crown have been handed over to the control of a commercial company. Assuming that this is a done deal, there’s probably no use the MPs who sang “Save our museum” along with me asking the minister of culture and sport what the heck he thinks he’s doing, allowing the family silver to be sold like this. Though it is OUR family silver, after all.
I suppose we should look on the bright side. The Picture House is a well-run company and perhaps there’ll be some decent marketing of Media Museum film shows for a change.
I produce a monthly Movietime radio show, with a Youtube version every four weeks, and how many times has anyone from the museum press department contacted me to suggest a special story? None.
I’ve heard on the museum grapevine that there’ll be a Northern Soul movie showing in mid-October. Given that I’m a music critic as well as a movie buff, surely I could be doing something special on this?
No doubt someone is setting up coach parties from Wigan and Blackpool. Don’t hold your breath.
