SIR - Regarding David Barnett's article "Hanging is a throwback to the dark ages" (T&A, January 9). All he and the anti-hanging brigade bleat on about are the rights of the perpetrators of this crime, never once giving a thought to the victim or victims.

Murder is now an everyday occurrence. At one time it was a rare occurrence. That was because people were frightened of the consequences.

As for being a throwback to the dark ages, maybe they had better ways of dealing with killers in their time - we certainly do not.
