SIR - The remark by Gerry Sutcliffe, to Jim Greenhalf (T&A, January 11) that 22 days with the police cannot make one an expert, could be classed as politically-motivated denigration.

I was privileged to hear Philip Davies's report on his experiences first hand and I can assure Mr Sutcliffe that it was the bobbies at the sharp end whom Philip classed as being the experts.

The acknowledged abject performance of the Home Office, of which Mr Sutcliffe is part of the hierarchy, indicates that it needs all the help it can get, irrespective of political affiliations.

Philip's findings were the product of both an incisive mind which has been honed by commercial competition and common sense.

Rather than decry him Mr Sutcliffe should seek his help.

Gerry Robinson has taken the lid off the NHS and Philip could do the same for the police.
