SIR – Over the years we’ve all learned to be wary of claims made by certain political parties, and I see no reason to make an exception for UKIP.

Their proposal to simply walk out of the EU is a high-risk strategy, given that some 4 million British jobs depend on what we sell to the rest of Europe. British industry (the CBI – again, not to take a figure from any political party) reckons that what is at stake is an average of £3,000 for every family.

Surely it is far better to stay in and help reform, change and improve the EU. Walking out slamming the door on our neighbouring countries is not a sensible way forward.
