SIR – David Cameron has said it more than once. President Bill Clinton once said it after a complete public denial on television of any indiscretion.

Nick Clegg more recently said it and it was humourously put to music on YouTube. Tony Blair vigorously refused to say it but his successor Gordon Brown sort of half-said it. Margaret Thatcher would never have dreamed of saying it, whatever the circumstances!

Faced with increased mounting evidence of gross errors of economic and financial judgement which have proved hugely costly by Government ministers with regard to the undervaluing of Royal Mail and instant enrichment of financial speculators, both Vince Cable and Michael Fallon are still stubbornly refusing to say sorry.

Both remain steadfastly adamant they made no mistakes whatsoever in the privatisation of this public asset and the enormous losses to public funds that have ensued.

In these particularly hard times of austerity when cuts are being made all over the place and are still scheduled to be made, this seems pretty hard to take. Many would say a simple, genuine apology is the least they could do!
