SIR – It was encouraging to see that Bradford Council has refused permission for several new signs at a historic pub venue in Saltaire. It’s to be hoped that the Council might now deal with the proliferation of banners and signs which are giving the Aire Valley towns a downright tatty image.

Every year sees an increasing number of plastic banners hanging off the railings by the side of roundabouts and outside schools. Many of the banners have been attached without the owner’s permission while others are advertising commercial functions at Council-owned premises such as arts centres and schools.

Along the major roads in the Shipley area, and probably elsewhere, there are businesses with too many signs and of illegal size. It is very obvious that the regulations which apply are not being enforced by the Council.

At least the Saltaire business mentioned above made an application to display new signs. In future, such businesses might take note of what other organisations are getting away with and decide to jump on the band wagon. It’s time to stop it before they do. Let’s see the banners taken down and the signs reduced to the legal size and number.
