SIR – Mr B Barraclough’s letter (T&A, April 18) suggesting that the City Hall in Bradford should be demolished, is to say the least hypocritical.
He is an avid supporter of seeing the Low Moor railway station reopened thus regaining some of our lost heritage, while on the other hand advocating that we are spending what he describes as “needless money” to maintain one of our most treasured city assets.
Our fine City Hall has long been established as our “jewel in the crown”, joined by the Alhambra and the very successful Mirror Pool.
During my working days, I often had meetings in City Hall – this magnificent structure constructed in 1873 in the style of Venetian Gothic is looked over by the impressive tower boasting 13 bells. The building serves as a testimony to the early success of our city.
The interior is equally impressive with fine ceiling and cornice detail complimented by rich oak hardwood and superb ironwork, a must see is the stunning Council Chamber.
It might be an idea for Mr B to take advantage of one of the tours of City Hall after which he might reconsider his assessment?
