SIR – I am concerned that teachers are calling for exam timetables to be amended when they clash with fasting for Muslim students.

This I feel is being blown out of proportion. I run a toddler group in Girlington and have done so for some 36 years. Over that time I have made countless Muslim friends and enjoyed many inter-faith discussions with them.

My understanding is that a) children are not forced to fast if they do not wish to, and b), anyone who cannot fast for personal reasons such as health, circumstances etc, can defer fasting until such a time as they are able to “make up” the days or if that is not possible at all, they can make prayers and a donation to a charitable cause.

Problem solved, and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my Muslim friends Eid Mubarak for when the celebrations begin.
