SIR – I was saddened to hear of the death of Tony Benn (pictured), a staunch socialist, who I know disagreed with much of New Labour’s policies.
After he had made known some years ago that he considered the EU to be the greatest threat facing the UK, I wrote to him to suggest he support UKIP, which I had not yet joined.
Unlike many other politicians I had contacted he sent a very friendly reply that he could not support any other party but Labour, which in the days of Harold Wilson, supported much later on by Tony Blair, who changed his tune, was anti-EU.
