SIR – It is clear that there have been warnings about the threat of flooding (pictured) for many years, yet this Government took no notice. Indeed the budget of the Environment Agency was cut.

This same Government has agreed to plans for upwards of eight nuclear power stations, all situated on the coast. Of course there have been enormous hurdles such as cost so as yet the only one even looking as if it will go ahead is at Hinkley in Somerset.

The major threat to the nuclear reactors on the coast is from global warming which will inevitably cause the sea levels to rise. This Government lobbied by the industry goes doggedly on while Labour Party spokesman Caroline Flint has stated “nuclear power is not the only answer but it’s an important part of our future”.

As for the Institute of Directors, they seem unable to think past their noses. They assert that nuclear power is “clean, cheap and safe”. Every one of those claims can be challenged.

Here is a chance for the Labour Party to take a decision based on good scientific evidence, but will they?
