SIR – How right is the Bradford Odeon Rescue Group to say (T&A, November 18) that the developer’s proposal for a block of flats behind the Alhambra and Odeon buildings would, as proposed, be totally detrimental to the skyline in that part of the city.

There is surely no doubt that the building, as shown on the artistic impression, would be utterly out of place, and ruin the backdrop provided by these two iconic structures.

Such a high-rise block, looking very much like buildings that have thankfully been pulled down, would most certainly not, as has been suggested, “improve the quality of the urban environment.” Quite the opposite, in my view.

The proposal, with its metal and glass tower, would be an eyesore at that particular location, and, if agreed at all, needs to be both significantly lower and constructed in a much more suitable material.

Have we not learned any lessons from the past? Our Council planners will no doubt provide the answer to that in due course.
