SIR – Well, it’s no surprise to learn that Sainsbury’s have pulled out of the proposed Bingley supermarket scheme – it may well be that the whole idea of buying the site in he first place was to prevent other competition in the town.
My personal opinion is that it could be a blessing in disguise for Bingley. Once the B&B building is demolished (and the rubble cleared away, presumably by Sainsbury’s), what could be better than a permanent market building on the site, with the present outdoor market area converted into reasonably-priced parking.
It could be something on the lines of Bradford’s long-departed Kirkgate Market with all types of businesses as occupants – make the rents reasonable and I’m certain it would bring much wanted trade to the town. Also, shoppers could browse in relative comfort in all weathers.
Just a thought, but I’m sure it would find favour with a lot of local people and visitors alike.
