SIR – In response to Gary Lorriman’s challenge (Letters, October 17), I suggest he consults Roget’s Thesaurus, where he will find any number of synonyms for slut.
They are equally insulting to women and all far worse in their usually understood meaning than simply keeping an untidy house.
My edition of Roget was published in 1930, and tells me that even in those dear dead days, slut was not a word which any decent man would use to describe a woman.
