SIR – I can only agree with Mr Chapman, re his letter on Saltaire roundabout, “Plans not real progress” (T&A, Letters Thursday, September 12).

Many years ago vehicle drivers were more courteous, but in more cynical times road rage seems to be the norm.

Mr Chapman recalls the trams and the tramshed turntable – which was used to enable trams to access lines to either routes to Bradford via Shipley to Bradford and Thackley and Bolton Junction or via Shipley, Frizinghall, Manningham to Forster Square where both routes ended.

When Bradford Corporation bought trams from Mid Yorkshire Tramways, some of the trams were stabled either at Thornbury or Saltaire.

Eventually the depot at Saltaire became a trolley bus depot and the roundabout installed, the dates of which can be found in books on the subject written by the late Stanley King.

In Saltaire, a trolley bus reverser was installed in Dove Street, which was used at peak periods to enable trolley buses to keep to the timetable through Shipley, Windhill, Thackley etc.

And in 1972, motorbuses were garaged at the tramshed and timetables were altered as these vehicles were much slower to accelerate.
