SIR – I welcome Alec Suchi’s views on the monarchy ‘Independence is key’ (Letters, August 19).

It is a myth that the monarchy is not political. The reason some Conservative party members and their supporters, to quote Mr Suchi, “Have a fawning and sycophantic attitude towards the Royal Family”, is because they view the monarchy as representatives of their own ideals.

Elected governments serve the unelected monarch, the monarch appoints the Prime Minister, she can also refuse a Prime Minister’s request for a general election.

The Queen has weekly meetings with the Prime Minister and a weekend with him or her every year at Sandringham.

She uses these meetings to put forward her own political beliefs which are described as ‘advisory’.

It’s been revealed recently that the heir to the throne Prince Charles regularly writes letters to the Prime Minister on issues he believes the Government should be pursuing.

Since 2010 he has held 53 private meetings with cabinet and junior ministers. Prince Charles can also veto any legislation that affects his private interests.

Need I say more?
