SIR – Re ‘A judge’s duty’, (Letters, August 22). Philip Bird makes an unusually unclear point in his letter. He is apparently saying that judges are not upholding the law of the land. I don’t get it! Evidence please, and I’ll raise it with my MP.
And while I think I agree with the sentiments in David Hornsby’s letter, ‘Time to tackle tax’, I can’t help thinking that things are being demanded of the coalition in taxing wealth which the self-styled (poor) people’s party – Labour – would not do.
I’m not one to defend the Tories, but do critics really expect the Tories to embrace more left-wing policies than Labour? These critics would have us believe that Government policies are purely about grinding down the poor.
Is this the aim of a Government in raising tax thresholds to £10,000, removing low-paid workers from paying any income tax, or the significant increases in pensions?
