SIR – We now read Bradford Council must save a further £14 million during the next three years.

Might I humbly suggest it starts saving immediately by dropping its ludicrous residents’ permit scheme?

Introduced ostensibly to save £150,000 per annum – a figure we later discovered it had simply plucked out of the air – this scheme is now costing a fortune!

And how do I know this? On visiting Sugden End tip, I was stopped by a young man who informed me it was his job to stop every car to check they were displaying the requisite residents’ permit. This was his sole job from 8am until 5pm every day of the week.

Assuming that every other tip in Bradford is similarly staffed, we must now have a yearly wages bill that will probably outweigh the £150,000 per annum the scheme was introduced to save. Just one more example of the total incompetence of Bradford Council. Is there any way we can rid ourselves of these profligate fools?
