SIR – Well said Philip Coote (Letters, August 21), why have I not thought to call the Greens ‘Luddites’, that is just what they are as examplified by the letter published immediately below his from Elaine Neale.

If we all used 50 per cent less energy it would not result in a doubling of prices which would mean we would all have to use even less and put some people out of business. Profits have to be looked at in reaction to total turnover; does she know the turnover?

It would appear we might be back on a quotidian dose of nonsense from our Socialist friend Christopher Hindle (Letters, August 21), who somehow sees a difference between the policies of the Coalition and Labour and which most people do not.

Lastly, having worked all my 50 years with virtually the same worsted spinner, I was very pleased to read ‘Can we cut our cloth to meet demand’ (T&A, August 21) and especially Peter Ackroyd’s take on the investment at Abraham Moon. He helped me and all in textiles a great deal and am glad his services are still required.
