SIR – Well done to Caroline Lucas, the Green party MP who stood up for her beliefs and the greater good of the area, alongside the people in Balcombe, West Surrey. They were protesting about the highly dubious, safety-unproven procedure known as hydraulic ‘fracking.’ This government have given an extremely, hurried inappropriate, ‘green’ light (pun intended) both with legislation and financial incentives to the companies involved, to go ahead with exploratory drilling throughout the country. As usual, the actual voter gets little say in it all, but of course, there will be lots of money to be made for some.

Ms Lucas was, it seems, arrested, but at least her constituents can be sure they have a representative who cares enough and is prepared to ‘put her own neck on the line’ – almost literally. After all the previous bad publicity for MPs over the last few years, it makes a change.

Drilling in the North West has already caused earth tremors, which makes me wonder if any elected representatives will stand up for us when the drilling companies come calling in these parts.
