SIR – Re the proposed ‘Super Council’ for West Yorkshire, some of us have painful memories of previous local government re-organisations, eg, 1974 when, as a former Pudsey ratepayer I was dragged into Leeds and found by 1976, just two years later, my rates had doubled!
The same happened with water, as under Pudsey Borough Council the charge – from Bradford Water – was minimal, but as soon as Yorkshire Water was created, then privatised, water is now a major item each month costing much more than my electricity bill.
So in my humble opinion, bigger is not always better.
Councils should be able to work together for our mutual benefit but without such formal arrangements, creating another needless tier of bureaucracy which can only increase costs to council tax payers and tenants at a time when many are struggling.
