SIR – Millions of people in the public sector whose wages have been frozen for at least two years are to get an increase of only one per cent, while the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is considering setting a pay rise of around ten per cent for our MPs, taking their salary to £75,000.
So the 19-year-old hospital clerk, married with a baby who told a TV reporter recently that his take-home pay was approximately £250 and he’s had to get an extra job at the weekends to make ends meet, will get an extra £130 per year, while MPs would see their salary increase by around £7,500 per year.
Credit where credit is due, the Deputy Prime Minister said that he would not accept an award well in excess of the pay increases for other public sector workers (T&A, July 2).
I wonder how many of our local MPs who purport to have the welfare of their constituents at heart will follow suit?
