SIR – Councillor Glen Miller, leader of the Conservative Group on Bradford Council, argues for more co-operation among the five West Yorkshire councils (T&A Letters, July 3).

Co-operation between the councils is nothing new. We had the West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council until the Tory government, led by Margaret Thatcher, abolished it in 1985, thus depriving the electorate of a vote every four years.

The Tory government’s action prevented the development of a sensible, integrated transport network run in the interests of the public. Instead, what we got were cuts in services and higher fares on our buses.

On our railways, investment was cut back, jobs were lost and fares were increased substantially. While running down our public transport system, they allowed bigger and heavier lorries on our roads causing massive damages to our roads and bridges.

If Coun Miller is serious about co-operation, I welcome it, but given his party’s commitment to capitalism, competition and confrontation, I doubt it.
