SIR – Donations to charity are a contentious issue and I prefer to give direct rather than support the professional fund raising industry.

Councillor David Green presumes that the Council has the right to dispense our money at their particular whim, for as you detail today, £20k was given to Palestine, and one suspects a hint of political motivation in the proposed £20k for a British Army charity.

Might I suggest that the Telegraph & Argus should ask its readers whether they want the Council to have carte blanche to support charities from imposed Council Tax, or whether they should leave contributions to an individual’s sense of responsibility.

For those citizens who are inclined to freely give, the Lord Mayor’s Charity would be the ideal vehicle for them to donate on behalf of their city.
