SIR – Does Philip Bird, (Letters, July 3), imagine that he is imparting great words of wisdom?

He states: (Lib-Dems)... “accept that they have no chance... of forming a government”.

Wow! Let me state categorically that Lib-Dems will not form a government today, tomorrow, not even next year – but who knows in a few years’ time?

Labour and the Tories have dominated national politics for nearly 100 years and are able to do so because we live in a mockery of democracy where for many decades the majority have not voted for the party of government, if ever!

The fact that we have a greater number of parties than (say) 50 years ago means that governments do not, and will not, have the positive backing of the majority.

A relatively small party, possibly with an extremist, power-crazed leader could win most seats and total control on only one-fifth of the vote, where five or more parties contest elections. This might include the BNP, EDL, religious-based parties, holocaust deniers – even UKIP!

Enough said!
