SIR – I was disappointed to read that Metro is to spend a further £200,000 investigating Bus Quality Contracts (T&A, June 29).
South Yorkshire have thoroughly investigated contracts and found that partnerships give much better value for money for passengers and transport authorities alike. Greater Manchester and Merseyside have come to the same conclusion.
At a time of massive cuts to local authorities, Metro is wasting money repeating work that is already completed when it could use the money for more bus shelters or tendered services. Metro is to be abolished in the near future and the demise of this institution cannot come too soon.
We are four decades behind the best UK cities on bus policy and the gap is growing. We need a good bus quality partnership to release Leeds and Bradford from the cost of congestion in these very difficult times.
