SIR – With regard to ‘Mansion magic in US teen’s novel’ (T&A, June 27), Anna Geiger, 13, of San Francisco, grand-daughter of Mary Carter, of Guiseley, might like to know that the most famous guest of the Ferrands family at St Ives Estate  in the 19th century was Conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, who like Anna, was also a novelist and at the same time was inspired to declare the Harden Valley the most beautiful spot in England.

In contrast to this rural idyll in the north of England, the MP for Maidstone in Kent stated of the first great industrial city in the world: ‘The age of ruins is past’.
