SIR – I am appalled at the planning department at Bradford Council for even considering a move to put a supermarket on the Crossley Evans site in Shipley. Why are they not supporting a well-established successful business more than 100 years old?
What encouragement does this show to our local businesses ? There will be an increase in traffic on an already busy route.
People drive to supermarkets, do their shopping and then go home, so Shipley centre will not benefit at all from this.
Has the Council forgotten what Shipley was like before Asda was built? There was a whole community with businesses, shops etc. How many supermarkets do we need?
We need to look after the shops we have and encourage new ones, but how will we do that with another supermarket? We need to encourage people to walk into and use the centre, support our local shops.
The people of Shipley do not need or want another supermarket. If we must have one, they should use the Cardinal site because that business is wanting to move and it would not have as much impact on Shipley centre.
Let’s hope the Council does the right thing and supports our local established businesses.
