SIR – The loss of any museums in the Science Museum Group would be a disaster, but if push comes to shove and the Media Museum is really threatened, I would like to make the following points.
The superb Manchester Museum of Science and Industry only joined the group just over a year ago, and so must have had viable funding for many years and it could stand on its own feet.
The Shildon Locomotion Museum, excellent as it is, is a subsidiary of the National Railway Museum and only a little way up the railway line. Its visitor numbers are less than half those of our own Media Museum. It could close and be reincorporated into the main rail museum, at least for the time being.
Having said that, we should fight to save all of them. The proposed decision to perhaps close one rather than cut facilities at all, including the Science Museum itself, is foolish. Once closed, a museum could well never open again.
As well as signing the Telegraph & Argus petition, may I suggest you also write to or e-mail all Bradford and district MPs, plus Culture Secretary Maria Miller MP.
The Director of the Science Museum is Ian Blatchford, whose address is The Science Museum, Exhibition Road, South Kensington SW7 2DD.
As a last resort, what about obtaining more sponsorship? Much as I would dislike the title, the Google or Microsoft Media Museum it would be better than no museum at all.
