SIR – I noted with interest how the news regarding the relocation of Central Library to City Park was reported and received.

I too applaud the Council’s solution for the library. However, to say that Bradford 1 Gallery will move to Cartwright Hall is disingenuous. Certainly in the short to medium term exhibitions planned for Bradford 1 will be incorporated into a modified programme at Cartwright Hall but there is no currently unused space there for the gallery to move into.

The plan has obvious advantages for the library and its users and perhaps for the museums and galleries service by allowing its squeezed budget to be used to best effect. Indeed, it should help the service to maintain its vibrant, stimulating programme.

Friends of Bradford Art Galleries and Museums encourage everyone to support the exhibitions and events our galleries and museums provide. In our modern world attendances count – use them or lose them.

We also urge the Council to look for ways of re-providing art exhibition space within the developing city centre.

While supporting the library plan, we need to be aware that by gaining a library the people of Bradford are losing an art gallery, a casualty of these straitened times.
