SIR – The Council’s latest ten-year plan is basically flawed in that it presumes that there is a demand for Bradford’s production, when there is not.

Other than certain niche remnants of our traditional mass production, Bradford’s former textile and engineering capacity has been switched by financiers to those parts of the world where lower labour and power costs together with scant adherence to ecological and health and safety issues, generate a better return on the multi-national capital employed.

Bradford’s economic future would be enhanced by the Council making positive moves to facilitate our becoming the UK and even European distribution centre for the burgeoning third world production.

Geographically, as M&S have found, we are ideally placed, and the trading skills we have locally would be a considerable advantage.

What Councillor Green should realise is that the most profit is not made from producing things, but from using commercial expertise to sell what other people produce.

Think again, David!
