Everyone recognises something needs to be done to improve Saltaire roundabout.

It is a bottleneck that causes chaos at morning and evening rush hours, and can be a nightmare for drivers at any time of day.

However, that does not mean allowing highways planners to push ahead with proposals whatever the cost.

As part of the detail of the scheme, it appears two streets currently used for parking by traders and shoppers on the parade in Bingley Road would be made no waiting at any time.

And that would be disastrous for these businesses, particularly at a time when they need every bit of support they can get.

Almost 250 people have now signed a petition and it is important Bradford Council looks closely at their arguments.

The Council position seems to be that they need to stop vehicles parking on this road to allow lorries to easily access the industrial estate at Hirst Wood.

It needs to show that this access is necessary as an integral part of the package before pushing ahead regardless of the impact on these businesses. And if it is, then they must come up with an alternative solution for parking for these shops.

This is an overall scheme that is absolutely vital to improve the flow of traffic, but consideration has to be given to the needs of these businesses, particularly at a time when trade is so tough.

It is surely not beyond the Council to find a workable solution that will not cause significant damage to people’s livelihoods. We have waited a long time for work to begin here – but it is important that work is done with due diligence for the business environment.
