SIR – Re ‘Power is not all ours’, from Coun Kevin Warnes (Letters, February 20). While I may accept the general thrust of what Kevin writes, I should like to know what he would like the current Government to do with the mess left by the former (Labour) Government?
Nick Clegg “is supporting a relentless Tory assault on our Council’s finances”, forcing cuts this year and next. While we wish cuts were unnecessary and have reservations on scale and timing, how else can we stop the debt from growing? Government money comes from us through taxes and borrowing. Where do the Greens want to see taxes raised and should we borrow ad infinitum?
I personally think it fair to tax the highest earners more. It’s a pity Labour didn’t!
It took Labour ten years to increase the rate on the highest earners, sneaking it in a few months before they were kicked out of office.
Labour weren’t interested in raising more from the rich – just in challenging the Tories to maintain or scrap the higher rate, which some (apparently including Labour), don’t expect to raise much more revenue.
