For the second time in a matter of weeks, a much-vaunted scheme designed to save householders energy has been left with a certain amount of egg on its face.

Recently, we saw a prestigious development of eco-homes in Bradford which were designed to greatly reduce fuel bills for residents actually leading to much higher than average payments.

And now, housing provider Places for People has had to call a halt to a £2.2m scheme to insulate all homes on a Bradford estate before it is completed because it does not have the funding.

That means that 24 houses on the Hawkshead Estate have been missed out on getting the same treatment as their neighbours, who are already seeing huge benefits in terms of heating savings.

It must be stressed that 178 homes have been insulated, and to great effect, but that is of little consolation to the remaining 24 homes yet to be done.

While schemes like this are extremely welcome, it is important that all who should benefit do see the full effect of improvements.

Projects which receive Government funding on the back of energy saving promises must be rigorously examined, and be shown to do exactly what they promise to do when they start up.

In this case, many have benefitted, and that should not be forgotten. But a large number have been left behind, and that should not be happening with schemes like this.

And as vital as finding ways to cut energy use is, it is also important that close attention is paid to how effective schemes will be before money is thrown at them.
