SIR – MP Philip Davies is to be commended for, once again, demanding action from the Transport minister for a bypass to ease Shipley’s road chaos (T.&A. Feb. 11).

Unfortunately, the proposals for the Shipley Eastern Relief Road have been on the table for a number of years and are hopelessly out of date.

This short road is proposed to run from Briggate, Windhill, along Crag Road and across the Shipley/Leeds railway, the canal and the river, joining the A6038 in the vicinity of Manor Paints.

By so doing, it bypasses the two envisaged superstores and the planned Holme Mill retail park, forcing the high volume of traffic anticipated from these enterprises to use the existing, unimproved Otley Road and Fox Corner.

It also funnels all through traffic into the Council’s soon-to-be-completed junction at Buck Lane, which is inadequately designed and lacks the capacity to cope with the present traffic flow.

Bradford needs nothing less than a new road from the Shipley/Airedale road, just East of Wapping, to the A65 at Guiseley.

Oh to be administered by Leeds City Council...
