SIR – Ian Lyons of the Liberal Democrats (Letters, February 4) asks that we seriously re-examine our democracy in the UK. Unfortunately, when politicians talk of democracy, it tends to be based on self- interest.
The Liberals support a proportional representation system of voting because they believe it would gain them more seats at election times, whereas they opposed the recent boundary changes because they feared it would lose them seats.
The unelected House of Lords has got nothing to do with democracy, yet David Cameron and Nick Clegg have done a deal to appoint 200 extra peers, at a cost of £26 million, so they can pack the House of Lords with their supporters to back government votes.
That is not democracy, it is vote-rigging.
