SIR - Muslim lawyer Miss Mughal amazingly decided to make a statement by wearing the niqab while attempting to conduct a court case. What utter nonsense to think the veil is appropriate in a courtroom.

Immigration judge George Glossop quite rightly asked her to remove it as he was having difficulty hearing what she said. The fact that she then defied the judge's request should have resulted in a charge of contempt of court.

The wearing of the veil is not a religious matter. It is has been seized upon by radicals and extremists and has become a symbol of separate communities and a rejection of the British way of life.

This medieval garb is banned in France, Holland, Belgium, Italy and Germany. It is even banned in Muslim Tunisia and Turkey where headscarves are rejected as backward-looking.

In the name of commonsense and respect for women - ban the veil.
