SIR – I have been interested to read the articles about the fire at the old cinema in Shipley. It is indeed a sad day that such an iconic building has been destroyed. My only question is, if it was so important, why wasn't it looked after properly?

All the time I have lived in Baildon (now coming up to 15 years) and even before, it has been in a run-down state.

Also, if there were old films in the building, why had they not been removed by the cinema owners before it was turned into a bingo hall?

It seems to me that it was left as a tired, old and neglected structure until it was past repair, just like the Odeon in Bradford.
