SIR – I am writing to you to lend my support to the campaign to stop the gradual privatisation of the National Health Service as a physiotherapist for the NHS for 11 years.

The CCGs and the Government support the idea of using any qualified provider because they say competition will improve quality. That is not true.

Were it based on experience and quality, then it could be a good thing, however, it is based on price and tariffs set for treatment, which means services run by experienced, loyal NHS staff will be priced out of the market.

There are areas where money can be saved, but it comes to a point where the only area money can be saved is staff. This means swapping more expensive, more experienced and qualified staff for a cheaper, less experienced alternative.

I spent four years completing an MSc in Rehabilitation studies and on completion face the prospect of being down-graded to a lower pay band as a reward. To say morale is low would be a bit of an understatement.

We know money must be saved but allowing more private companies to take over is not the way. The government should be giving more help to services to make them more businesslike and improve financial viability, and reward staff loyalty rather than simply giving work away to anyone looking to make a profit.
