SIR – Philip Bird (T&A, December 10) does Professor Anne Oliver a disservice. She was recently promoted to be the Chief Scientific Officer for the European Union, where she will base all her decisions on the evidence available.

She recently said “the evidence for climate change is convincing and the impact of doing nothing is catastrophic... it is a moment of reckoning for the human species”.

She would also be able to answer Philip’s other question. The universally accepted problem is the unabated rise in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere – hence the need for electric cars with batteries topped up with renewable or nuclear electricity.
