SIR – Whether Shipley needs another supermarket is a matter for its own debate.

However, the suggestion (T&A, December 10) that a new supermarket could be built on the Cardinal site at the junction of Salts Mill Road and Otley Road, on the Baildon side of Shipley, is a totally different issue.

There is no doubt that there are already substantial traffic problems in that area at all times of the day in midweek, and on a Saturday.

The thought of hundreds of additional vehicles arriving and departing every hour from a new supermarket at the proposed location simply doesn’t bear thinking about.

The road infrastructure has difficulty in coping as it is, and it is hard to see how any alterations could improve the situation. As such, surely this suggestion needs nipping in the bud now, before it moves much further forward?

When one then considers the also unacceptable proposal for a Wickes store and KFC outlet at the Baildon Road/Otley Road junction, it must be totally apparent that both are unworkable with the road system as it is?
