SIR – Having just read the Court File section of Saturday’s Telegraph & Argus, I was appalled at sentences handed out to two transgressors Firstly, driver aged 18 – driving without due care, £110 fine plus £100 costs; failure to stop when required by police, no separate penalty; driving without insurance, no separate penalty; driving without a licence, no separate penalty. Total fine, £210.
Secondly, driver aged 21 – failure to stop after an accident, £125 fine plus £100 costs; driving without due care and attention, no separate penalty; failure to report an accident, no separate penalty; driving without a licence, no separate penalty; driving without insurance, no separate penalty. Total fine, £225.
It makes me sick.
So come on, boys and girls – don’t bother with all the expense of driving lessons and taking the test, don’t bother with car insurance, and if you do have a bump, why bother to involve the police or report it?
It’s far cheaper, after all!
