It is heartening to hear of a Bradford-based company doing well at any time, but the success of cleaning products manufacturer Astonish is cause for celebration on more than one front.

With the country still struggling through one of the worst economic downturns in memory, the fact that the company, based near the M606, has just signed its 40th export deal for its products is especially noteworthy, and all involved should be credited for their tenacity and determination in succeeding across the globe where so many others have failed.

But what is particularly special about the success of Astonish is that a year ago they had been so plagued by theft and vandalism that they were considering pulling out of Bradford altogether. The company had only moved into the purpose-built factory on the Euroway trading estate two years ago, and if the district had lost them back to where they originated in Leeds, or to another part of the region, it would have been very bad news for Bradford.

That Astonish decided to stick with Bradford despite these setbacks is testimony to their true grit, as is the strength of their company that now sees them selling across America, China, the Middle East and even Outer Mongolia.

It is sad that a company that put its faith in Bradford was repaid with thuggery, but ultimately they rose above it and have come out of it a stronger and more successful company. Let us hope that their success inspires other companies to relocate to Bradford, and let us hope that the police, the Council and all other relevant agencies continue to ensure that the district is a safe and secure location to thrive in.
