SIR – In her hearty congratulations to the Respect Party for its “third place” at the Rotherham by-election (Letters, December 4), Ms Mubarik Iqbal is either applying a creative grasp of statistics or choosing to rewrite history.
A quick check of the official results will confirm that Respect actually finished in fourth place, behind the BNP.
That the voters of Rotherham chose to grant more votes to the BNP than Respect may exercise Ms Iqbal and many others, but that is no reason to disregard the electoral truth or to promote a different version of it.
