SIR – It was interesting to read the comments about the Baildon footpath row (T&A, November 20), especially the general assumption that people were making about the origin of the land concerned.
Without exception the contributors inferred that the area is a ‘greenfield’ site; however (as the organisers of BRAID themselves acknowledge), it is in fact the site of an old dyeworks and would therefore in my estimation constitute a ‘brownfield’ site.
While I personally have serious reservations about the impact that developing this site will have on traffic problems in that area of Baildon – anyone who uses Otley Road of a morning will know just how much congestion there is on it – I think it’s important for there to be some honesty in the debate.
There are some people who want to use this issue for their own political ends, not to improve the life of people who live close to the Otley Road.
I would therefore suggest that the organisers of BRAID adopted the following slogan “Less Wagons, not Band-Wagons!”
